Biella passed this flyer around on the Debian-NYC mailing list. If you are in New York City this Friday, you won't want to miss this Eben Moglen's talk.

Perl Seminar NY: Meets Tuesday, Nov 17
Our tenth season continues next Tuesday night:
Perl Seminar New York
Tuesday Nov 17 2009
6:15 – 8:15 pm
NYPC User Group
481 8th Ave (Ramada New Yorker Hotel, West 34 St)
Suite 550
Main Topic: Perrin Harkins: "Choosing a Web Architecture for Perl"
Perl Seminar NY is once again pleased to welcome Apache expert and veteran Open Source contributor Perrin Harkins to speak at our meeting.
In the past few years, many new web proxy servers have come onto the scene with new performance promises and features. Servers based on non-blocking I/O bring claims of greatly improved performance. At the same time, FastCGI has become more widely used, giving people a possible alternative to mod_perl. Perrin's talk will help you choose the right architecture for your project by presenting a useful set of benchmarks and a comparison of strong points and key features.
Hope to see you on Tuesday November 17.

Wonderful WordCamp NYC experience
I had a blast on Saturday. Let me put it again in bold, I had an awesome experience yesterday at WordCamp NYC. If you ever have the opportunity, you shouldn't miss the chance to attend one of them, it's really inspiring, people is very, very welcome and I loved the fact that there's so many people with all sorts of backgrounds and focused on many fronts on the Web and blogging world, not just technical.
During the course of this starting week, I'll be posting my notes and remarks on each one of the talks I attended, I believe they do require their own attention. With as much as eight simultaneous tracks, it was pretty much impossible to hear them all, so I focused on technical talks (go figure) and on the "beginning developer" track, since I pretty much knew close to nothing when it comes to WordPress core development.
Unfortunately I couldn't attend Sunday sessions due to health issues. I'm seriously sorry about that. Anyhow, to be honest, I cannot easily recall another conference that left me with such a nice feeling after attending it.
Also, expect more blogging here.
Attending WordCamp NYC
I'll be attending WordCamp NYC this upcoming weekend. There's a lot of very interesting talks and people speaking at the conference, so it was basically a no-brainer since it's being held in Manhattan. Plus, WordPress is one of the platforms I've always liked and admired on how they have achieved to become a mainstream product with a huge amount of active users and developers. I started using it way back in 2004 when it was b2/cafelog, so it's been a long ride.
If you'll be around, poke me.
Debian Workshop 1 at New York City
So Debian-NYC, mainly the DebConf10 local team, organized a workshop for people interested on Debian packaging. The nice people of drop.io offered their handy location in Brooklyn.
So this is the first attempt to bring new comers to Debian aiming DebConf10 next summer. Micah and dkg are the ones leading the workshop so far.
Pictures!
Perl Seminar NY: 2009-10 Season Begins Tuesday Oct 20
This next Tuesday October 20th, the Perl Seminar returns to New York City! This is a great effort by Jim Keenan, always trying to push the meetings and encouraging people on attending and sharing. There's usually one meeting per month and it's very well located, in midtown Manhattan, on a suite in the Ramada New Yorker hotel building facilitated by the NYPC User Group.
The first meeting will be about Git, GitHub and how you can use it on your Perl code and projects. It'll be very interesting for newcomers! More details on the original post, and make sure to subscribe to the discussion group.
Back from Spain
We got back from Spain yesterday. It was a nice overall vacation experience but a little too long for our own style and like, specially after spending two weeks in Mexico City. Lots of photos (at least some) are on our Flickr and some more on my TwitPic.
I couldn't be happier to be back in New York.
Debian NYC get-together and PGP key signing
If you happen to be in the NYC area this Friday May 8th, come over to our get-together to have a few beers/club sodas at Pacific Standard in Park Slope, Brooklyn (at 8 pm, map here). We will also be holding a PGP/GPG key signing par-tay at 9 pm, so make sure you bring your government-issued ID and your printed keys. More information about it, here.
Ebbie @ Twitter
New York BSP personal to-do list
So, as it was previously anounced (and recently re-invited by Micah), this weekend is the debiannyc BSP. This makes me think on my lack of involvement on the technical part of Debian (I'm still socially involved with friends and groups) for the last couple of months. So, for the sake of encouraging others to join us on Saturday if you in the city (or the tri-state area, or beyond!), here it is, my personal list of tasks I'm willing to work on:
- Retake/rewrite the tools and scripts I used to mess WNPP with.
- Check what other things are missing to improve WNPP.
- Deal with some of the lists.debian.org bugs wearing my listmaster hat.
- Install Debian on a Vortex86 machine I've been having around for the last couple of months.
- Dig into Ruby and Perl RC bugs and try to squash some of them (after all, this is a BSP, and RC bugs is the primary target!).
- Encouraging Raquel to take a look at some of the previous www.debian.org re-design proposals and try to come up with something useful out of it.
- Have lots of beer while doing all of above.
See you at Vireo!
UPDATE: The BSP was a lot of fun. Striking now the things I actually did from my list.
